Online Personal Financial Education for Government
Government agencies are increasingly offering employees some form of electronic personal finance education. This is in keeping with the Retirement Systems Modernization (RSM) Program. By offering personal financial education as part of their employee benefits, both seniors who are nearing retirement and new employees can better navigate the mysteries of personal finance management.
The primary benefits of offering a government workplace financial education program include:
- 1. Increasing participation in and contributions to Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) and other retirement plans.
- 2. Helping employees better navigate and understand the Retirement Systems Modernization (RSM) Program.
- 3. Helping employees obtain and maintain security clearances.
- 4. Helping employees improve their personal financial wellness.
- 5. Improving employees' chances to retire early or on time.
- 6. Preventing theft and the selling of government secrets.
Historically, when the government has made this form of Employee Assistance Program (EAP) available to their employees, they have done so by bringing in a financial planner from the securities firm that managed their TSP plans. This face-to-face training or workshop format is not the most effective medium for the following reasons:
- Not all employees are able to attend the training at the same time due to logistical and schedule constraints.
- The right material was delivered at the wrong time in an employee's life.
- Training was focused heavily on retirement planning only.
- Presentations were biased and focused on promoting the financial services of the presenting firm.
To address this need of workplace financial education, we work with federal, state, and local government to build branded, custom online financial education web portals and other web-based resources. These portals are accessed from the Intranet or the Internet and are not available to the general public.
Our branded online financial education portals are creative and user-friendly with a focus on financial literacy, retirement planning and preparation, and investor education. Our portals are designed to speak a cohesive message to your people. Providing the most current content along with interactive tools, assessments, surveys, calculators, and other resources helps ensure your employees find what they want when they need it.
Some topic areas include Money Management, Credit Management, Financial Planning, and Financial Milestones. In addition to these topic areas, portals provide users access to a wide range of financial calculators, including: Net worth, Expense Tracking, Home Budget, Savings Tool, Credit Card Payoff Estimator, Debt to Asset, and others.
Other key resources within the portal include: Downloadable Personal Finance Software, Financial Terms Glossary, Articles, Surveys, Assessments, Quizzes, and various other resources.
Disclaimer: Portals do not endorse any specific securities providers or make securities recommendations. Users should consult their financial planner or a certified securities broker for such advice. Portals are intended to be educational only and provide a broad understanding of personal financial areas in general.
